Two Tiered Program

•    Spinal Chord Injured victims and the Himalayan Mobile Rehabilitation Team
•    PT Training at the 4 RMF Clinics in association with HOAP Primary Health Care Project

The first tier of this Team Whole Health/BWWB initiative will support the international efforts aimed at rehabilitating disabled spinal cord injury (SCI) survivors of the devastating 2005 Pakistan earthquake.  There are about 700 known survivors, mostly young women and children who have become paralyzed from the waist or neck down with lifelong bladder and bowel control dysfunction. They are scattered in the mountains of Balakot and Kashmir and with their surviving families, are still living in shelters and tents, nearly 2 years after the earthquake.    Z. Vanek

In the valley of Balakot, a small clinic currently addresses the medical needs of those survivors who have lost their limbs (amputees). More than 150 SCI patients who are living in adjacent and distant mountains have been registered at this clinic. This clinic is not equipped with neuro-rehabilitation staff, medicines or supplies that are crucially needed for the survival and medical care of SCI patients. Z. Vanek

It remains a challenge to rehabilitate the SCI survivors in the difficult Himalayan terrain. They need psychosocial, medical, educational and vocational rehabilitation and construction of disabled-friendly homes. Without this, they are not likely to survive for long. With optimal rehabilitation, they can live a meaningful life of relative independence and dignity, without further pain and suffering.

This Team Whole Health/BWWB initiative will provide training in the Trager® Approach for Physical Therapists and lay caregivers having to treat amputees and spinal chord injured in these remote regions.  Possessing adequate skills to work daily with victims will increase the potential for better rehabilitation.

The second tier of this initiative will train therapists at the four Real Medicine Clinics in Talhatta, Pakistan that provides medical care for over 80,000 people.   The training protocols will follow those developed for Sri Lanka and will be adapted to optimize our presence and may involve combining trainings when possible.
